Frequently Asked Question

6. Design a lesson
Last Updated 16 days ago

Lesson Designer builds one lesson plan and the activities for that class period. Use it when the section path is Design a lesson, or when you are designing a lesson inside a unit.

Start

  • For a section that is itself a lesson, select Design a lesson on the chooser, or Design this lesson on the hub.
  • For a lesson inside a unit, expand the unit and select Design this lesson on that subsection. That button is shown when the lesson is still a draft and has no activities yet.

The wizard title is Lesson Designer. The steps are Methodology, Describe, Lesson, Lesson plan, and Activities. If the site has only one methodology turned on, the methodology step is skipped.

Methodology

  • Understanding by Design (UbD)
  • BOPPPS Model — bridge-in, outcomes, pre-assessment, participatory learning, post-assessment, summary
  • Gagné’s Nine Events of Instruction
  • Merrill’s Principles of Instruction

Changing the methodology clears plan fields that are not part of the new model. AIM asks you to confirm before it does that.

Describe

Describe the lesson in the prompt, upload a lesson plan or worksheet, or both. Example prompt: “A 60-minute Grade 11 Economics lesson on scarcity, choice, and opportunity cost.” Select Analyze & Next.

Lesson

Review the lesson title, duration in minutes, audience, tone, and language. Map the lesson to course outcomes if you have them, and add optional lesson objectives. Select Generate lesson plan.

Lesson plan

Edit the teacher plan. Source labels show whether a section came from your upload, your description, AI, or your own edits. Open sections appear as cards. Use Add section for optional parts of the model. This plan page is hidden from students. Select Generate activities when the plan is ready.

Activities

Review the proposed activities. Activity titles in the plan should match the activity names. Select Create lesson. Done returns you to the Design Hub.

On the hub, the lesson row shows Draft or Published, the methodology, a Lesson plan label when a plan is saved, and the activity count. Edit lesson plan is in the Edit menu.
