Frequently Asked Question

Activity Designer drafts a single Moodle activity for a section or a lesson. You review it before it is added. It stays hidden from students until you publish it.

Start

On the Design Hub, open the section or lesson and use Add content. Select Activity Designer.

Choose the activity

The first question is What kind of activity do you want to design? Pick one Moodle activity. AIM drafts it for this section. The types a site can offer are:

• Assignment, Quiz, Forum, Book, Glossary, Wiki
• Choice (poll), Database, Feedback, Lesson, Workshop
• Page, and Text and media area
• H5P

For H5P, the next question is Which H5P type?

• Question Set (Multiple Choice)
• True/False
• Interactive Book — a multi-page reading with embedded questions
• Interactive Video — a video with a short check near the end
• Course Presentation — slides from a topic, or an imported PowerPoint
• Branching Scenario

Give AIM a source

Most activities ask for at least one source. You can describe what you want, upload a file, or base the draft on an existing resource in the course. Upload accepts PDF, Word (.docx), PowerPoint (.pptx), or plain text, up to 15 MB. The file is used only to generate the activity. It is not added to the course.

A few types are stricter:

• Quiz, upload a question file — use this when the file already contains the questions. Use Describe what you want when you are writing the quiz from a topic or a reading.
• Course Presentation — choose one path. Generate slides from a topic builds a slide deck with no quiz questions. Import a PowerPoint accepts .pptx only. Text boxes, pictures, simple shapes, tables, embedded audio, and backgrounds are imported. Charts, SmartArt, and linked audio are skipped.
• Interactive Video — choose one video. A hosted video can be YouTube, Vimeo, Panopto, or a direct MP4 or WebM link. Echo360 and Kaltura are not accepted. An uploaded file must be MP4 or WebM, up to 15 MB. AIM does not watch or transcribe the video. It drafts one three-question check at the end, from the description you type.

Optional dates and completion settings can be left blank. Blank fields use the site defaults.

Review and add

Select Generate draft. In the teacher preview, correct answers are highlighted. Students do not see the preview that way.

Add the activity. AIM confirms it was added to the section and is hidden until you publish. On the hub it appears in the activity list with a Draft pill. Use the magnifying-glass preview to read it again, or Publish activity in the Edit menu when students should see it.

If generation fails, check the source and try again. A draft that sits too long expires. Generate it again. If AIM says an H5P type is not installed, an administrator needs to add that H5P library on the site.
